Anna Nicole Smith wowed the world with her curvy figure, blonde
hair, and massive knockers, there was the gorgeous Jayne Mansfield.
Without a doubt, she helped define the term “blonde bombshell” and ushered in
a new age of cinematic sexuality.
Born Vera Jayne Palmer in 1933, Mansfield was one of the leading sex symbols of the otherwise tame 1950s. With her 40D-21-36 measurements and platinum blonde hair, she went through men like they were going out of style and lived a thoroughly over-the-top lifestyle. She studied drama and physics at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas and was married at 16. Taking some time off to raise her child, she soon resumed acting and modeling, winning several beauty contests during her time in The Lone Star State. The family eventually moved to Los Angeles so that Jane could continue her acting career. She studied drama at UCLA, worked odd jobs, and eventually started landing bit parts in Warner Brothers productions. Her big break came in 1955 when she starred in the Broadway production of Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter?. Afterwards, she returned to Hollywood and starred in a string of films including The Girl Can’t Help It, The Wayward Bus, and Kiss Them for Me. In 1955, she also bared her amazing body for Playboy and was named Playmate of the Month for February. She would pose numerous times for the magazine over the coming decade. After starring in several commercial flops, roles began to dry up for Mansfield, so she appeared in European films and showed off as much skin as possible. Have I mentioned that I love the Europeans? During this time, she and husband Mickey Hargitay (a former Mr. Universe) headlined a show at Dunes in Las Vegas called The House of Love. The show was a major hit and Mansfield earned $35,000 a week for her participation. In 1963, she became the first mainstream actress to appear nude in an American motion picture. The controversial film was entitled Promises! Promises! and achieved enough box-office success to land Jayne on a list of Top 10 Box Office Attractions for the year (although her boobs should have really made the list). The Hollywood resurgence didn’t last long, though, and Mansfield once again turned to low-budget films and nightclub shows. Although her star had dimmed considerably, she was still considered an attraction and continued to maintain some celebrity status up until her death. Tragically, Mansfield died in 1967 when the car she was riding in struck the back of a tractor-trailer. She left behind three ex-husbands, five children, and a nation of sad and still-horny fans. A fascinating woman, Mansfield was reputed to have had an I.Q. of 160 despite her sexpot image (and the fact that she would often allow her tits to “accidentally“ pop out of her dresses). She was also considered the chief rival of Marilyn Monroe during the time that they were both at the top of their respective careers. In fact, while Monroe is often believed to have had an affair with John F. Kennedy, Mansfield (not to be outdone) was linked to brother Robert Kennedy. She was a Golden Globe and Golden Laurel winner, but at the same time owned a 40-room mansion dubbed “The Pink Palace” and confessed to an insatiable sexual appetite. Without a doubt, this was a woman of sharp contradictions. History has largely forgotten Mansfield, as she has been swallowed up by the larger shadow (but smaller boobs) of Marilyn Monroe. Still, her legacy lives on in her daughter Mariska Hargitay, a Golden Globe and Emmy winner for her role on Law and Order: SVU. And just like her mother, she’s a complete knockout.
